EASTLEIGH goalkeeper Joe McDonnell claims recent clean sheets are down to the "whole team" not just himself and the defenders after Saturday's 1-0 win over Kidderminster Harriers.

The victory confirmed the Spitfires' National League survival and also made it three clean sheets in the last four matches.

The 29 year old made important saves from Kidderminster's Jack Lambert and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas to help earn the win.

Speaking to official club media, he admitted the work that manager Kelvin Davis and assistant manager Danny Butterfield have done has helped massively in the defensive department.

He insisted: "We've conceded way too many goals this season. When the gaffer and Butts (assistant Danny Butterfield) came in, that was one thing that we tried to work with them.

"It was tough. We’ve had similar away games recently. Woking and York were very similar to that where it wasn’t necessarily our best game, but we defended well.

"We’re safe now and that’s the main aim we’ve had. We’re really happy to get it done.

"Last year we did really well with clean sheets. This year we’ve been short but now we’ve started getting a few more. It’s been really enjoyable. The games haven’t been great.

"The whole team is defending well. It’s not just me or the defenders, it’s the whole team from back to front so there are plaudits to everyone really."

Stand-in captain for the afternoon, Paul McCallum headed in the winner for his 31st National League goal of the season.

It means McCallum is six goals clear of second-placed Will Grigg at the top of the goalscoring charts.

"As we’ve seen, he is a real threat. He’s a focal point of our team," McDonnell claimed.

"Him and Quigs (Scott Quigley) work really hard up top. When he gets his chance, he normally takes them.

"Recently there haven’t been that many chances for him to feed off but today he probably got one or two and he got his goal. He’s massive for us."

The Spitfires finish their season with a trip to Wealdstone on Tuesday before hosting Halifax Town on Saturday, April 20 at the Silverlake Stadium.
