Winchester College's Wilfred La Fontaine Jackson and skipper Ed Ellis shared a 133-run partnership to dig St Cross Symondians out of trouble.

They were within sight of an eventual five-wicket win over Corsham in the ECB Royal London Cup preliminary round at Station Road.

The pair came together with St Cross rocking at 47-4 and swung the match in dramatic fashion with Fontaine Jackson hitting an unbeaten 92 and Ellis a boundary laden 77, 52 runs of which crossed the rope.

They took the St Cross total to 180-5 when Ellis was caught, but victory was completed without further loss and with 22 balls to spare.

It was the second time in the tie the defending ECB Southern Premier Division champions had clawed themselves back into the game, Corsham appearing set for a sizeable score at 193-4 (Harry Foyle 3-34) with four of their 40 overs remaining.
But an extra-ordinary collapse, triggered by Australian Sam Beer (3-25) and Jack Bransgrove, who finished with an expensive 4-55 off six overs, saw the Wiltshire-based West of England Premier Division hosts lose their last six wickets for 18 runs to 211 all out.

The wicket spree continued at the start of the St Cross reply, the Winchester club sinking to 47-4 in the 12th over.

Significantly, Fontaine Jackson kept his wicket intact and steadied the St Cross ship in a crucial match-winning stand with Ellis, whose innings contained four sixes and seven fours.

Unlike all of his weather marooned team-mates, Fontaine Jackson had enjoyed key early season middle-time for Winchester College – and how it showed with the 17-year old A-level student unleashing a volley of fours in the latter stages of his innings to seal a fine victory.

He finished unbeaten with 92, an innings which included two sixes and 12 fours.
