INTERNATIONAL Nurses Day was recently marked in East Wellow at the grave of Florence Nightingale.

Paula Hull, chief nurse at Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust, and Angela Anderson, chief of nursing at Solent NHS Trust, jointly led a delegation of nurses from across the Solent area at St Margaret’s Church on Thursday, May 9. 

A brief service led by Rev Emma D’Ath, chaplain to Solent NHS Trust, commenced with a nurse processing a lamp to the altar to commemorate Florence Nightingale, known across the world as The Lady of the Lamp.

The nurses followed the service by laying flowers on Florence’s grave which is simply marked 'FN 1820-1910'.

Events at St Margaret’s will be continued on Sunday, May 12 at the annual service to mark Florence’s birthday when Colonel Andrea Lewis, Colonel Commandant of the Queen Alexander Royal Army Nursing Corps and Colonel Jane Carey-Harris.

Master of the Worshipful Company of Nurses will represent army nurses and the nursing profession. Also at the service will be the Mayor of Test Valley Cllr Phil Lashbrook, chairman of Wellow Parish Council Julian Pease and Romsey MP Caroline Nokes.
