A schoolfriend of a man who was killed in a devastating crash is appealing to football fans to help pay tribute to him.

Joe Godden, 28, died after an alleged hit-and-run on Winchester Hill in Romsey last week.

The talented musician has been described as ‘really good lad’ with a ‘heart of gold’.

To honour his memory, Joe’s old schoolfriend George is asking spectators at Southampton FC’s match against Preston to clap for 60 seconds at the 28th minute.

George, who did not want his full name to be used, said: “Joe was the nicest guy who did so much for charity with his running. I think everyone should be made aware of him and how great he was.

“It is important to remember what an amazing guy he is, and to also draw some attention to the police appeal to get information.

“This tribute will happen regardless. No matter what, Joe will be remembered for the amazing guy he was.”

Landlady of the Coach and Horses pub Kelly Scott also paid tribute to her former employee.

She said: “Joe was a hard worker and would help anybody – he had a heart of gold.”

Police are continuing to investigate the crash. A spokesperson said: “We would like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time of this incident. Did you witness anything, or were you nearby at the time and recall any vehicle which raised any concerns?

“Also, do you have any footage which may assist in our investigation, including dash cam, CCTV, doorbell camera or mobile phone?

“If you have any information, please call 101 and quote incident number 44240152484.”
