Winchester, the county town of Hampshire, offers countless activities, from exploring its rich cultural heritage to an array of exciting shops and restaurants situated on the main High Street. But what does it have to offer in terms of the art of cinematography? What are your options for catching that latest film you have just been dying to see?

There are two cinemas practically located for movie-goers based in Winchester; an Everyman cinema, located in the town itself, and a Vue cinema, in nearby Eastleigh.

So, how do these cinemas shape up against each other?

Starting with the Vue cinema in Eastleigh, it is located in the Swan Centre, a five-minute walk from Eastleigh’s railway station, which in turn is only a ten-minute train ride away from Winchester. These trains go regularly, so it is always easy to align public transport with your movie times to make for the most seamless journey possible.

According to Lily Fazackerley, a frequent visitor to the establishment, Vue offers a ‘wide variety of films’, with there being ‘something for everyone’, whether you enjoy the cheesiness of a terrible rom-com or are addicted to the adrenaline rush only provided by psychedelic horrors. She describes the theatres as ‘clean’, and the seats ‘comfy’. What is so appealing about Vue cinemas across the United Kingdom are the prices starting from £4.99 per person, making this an appealing social activity, especially for teenagers.

The Everyman cinema, on the other hand, could be considered as much more upmarket, with a standard concession ticket setting you back £14.90. Lily, who has also visited this cinema, describes these prices as ‘not necessarily paying for what you get’. However, enjoying a movie at an Everyman cinema is ‘an experience’, different from other companies in that you get to sit on sofas. While there is less variety and choice of times at this cinema, it definitely provides the suitable atmosphere for a romantic date or for a treat-yourself night after a long week of work.

Also important to note is Everyman’s location. It is situated on Southgate Street, only a five-minute walk from Winchester’s city centre, making it more convenient than Vue. This also takes away the cost of paying for public transport (though a ticket from Winchester to Eastleigh should only set you back around £2).

Overall, there are two fantastic cinemas easily accessible from Winchester, each offering completely different experiences. Alternatively, stay home, throw some popcorn in the microwave, and slap on a Netflix film! All of the options are equally appealing.
