A PLANNING application has been submitted to reclad a science building at The Henry Beaufort Secondary School in Winchester.
The school in Harestock is one of the 450 ‘SCOLA’ schools in Hampshire built with components that were only made to last 25 years; however, many of the school buildings are still in use 50 years on.
The campus contains 11 buildings consisting mainly of teaching spaces, a sports hall with office, toilets and changing rooms, a gym hall and a concert hall, plus several single and two-storey buildings, as well as a four-storey SCOLA block which were recently reclad.
As part of the new system of recladding these school buildings, Hampshire County Council aims to reclad the science block, which is made of a steel frame, single-glazed ‘Crittall’ type windows and an uninsulated flat roof.
The proposed works include the removal of the existing glazing and panels and recladding of the original building with “high performance” insulation and an outer covering of brick slip panels.

The external single-glazed ‘Crittall’ windows and doors will be replaced with new “thermally broken double-glazed” units with external door widths.
A new external ramp will be constructed to the north elevation of the building leading from the new fire exit. The building will also be re-roofed to prevent heat loss and improve thermal performance.
Work will also include upgrading the existing lighting to high-efficiency LED lights, which will also be installed.
Public consultation is open for those who wish to submit comments, with the application found on the county council’s planning portal under reference 24/00404/HCS.
