Ted Hart (Letters, December 21) is right when he says that the best site for a new hospital would be the Sir John Moore Barracks for a number of reasons:

1. The site is in public ownership and a book transfer from defence to health would cost the taxpayer nothing.

2. The site is already well served by all utilities - electricity, water, sewerage, telecoms etc and it is probable that buildings already on the site might be convertible to hospital use at reasonable cost.

3. The extension of park and ride to north Winchester and the proposed improvement to the A34/M3 link will give excellent public transport and road links for the public and emergency services.

4. The RHCH site would become available as a public asset for the provision of affordable housing with good transport links.
