A CAFE on the edge of Winchester has confirmed that it has regained water after a nearby water main burst.

As previously reported, the Handlebar Cafe at the carpark on Garnier Road was without water yesterday, November 14, after a digger struck a pipe. The café had no hot water for approximately four hours.

The machine was working on the new Tun Bridge which Hampshire County Council has been constructing over the Itchen Navigation.

Café owner Heather Evans confirmed that the business regained water at 2.30pm that day.

Ms Evans told the Chronicle when the pipe burst: "We have been told a digger for the bridge has gone through a water main. We are without water and so are several other nearby houses. I don't know if it has gone as far as the park and ride.

"We are going to be hours without water. The disruption from this work has been unbelievable. QWe are discussing what to do."

The construction of the bridge started last spring and was supposed to be finished by this month. But the finish has been delayed until next February.

Handlebar Café stayed open to sell cold drinks and cakes until water could be restored.

A spokesperson for Hampshire County Council, said: “We can confirm that a water pipe was damaged yesterday morning during construction work to replace Tunbridge on Garnier Road. This led to a temporary disruption to local water supplies affecting several properties. Southern Water attended the site and fixed the issue. We apologise for any inconvenience this caused.”
