DEVELOPERS are urging residents to give their feedback on plans to build between 750 and 1,000 homes at an army barracks near Winchester.

The Littleton Village Design Statement has been updated to include residential-led proposals for Sir John Moore Barracks at Flowerdown.

As part of the four-stage consultation programme, the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) is holding two community events this month for residents to have their say on its vision to create a “distinctive neighbourhood for Winchester”.

The developers are hoping to gather feedback on their proposal and welcome further ideas on the site and how it would best fit into the community.

The major scheme includes a park and ride site and plans for between 750-1,000 homes

A previous idea for a business park has not been adopted. There are proposals for a business park development at Bushfield Camp on the south side of the city.

Local people will be keen that much of the site, which has been managed by the Ministry of Defence as a nature reserve, will be retained.

However, a masterplan is yet to be finalised, with the army barracks not closing until 2026.

Robert Smith, head of major disposals at the Defence Infrastructure Organisation Estate Division, said: “Our four-stage consultation programme is designed to give Winchester’s community the opportunity to shape the future of the site.

“Our overarching vision is to celebrate the legacy of the barracks whilst creating a new neighbourhood for Winchester that will deliver high-quality homes, public green spaces and community facilities, that also protect and enhance biodiversity. We’re looking forward to hearing from residents about their ideas on how we can best realise that ambition in the months ahead.”

The first consultation event is on Friday, November 10, from 3pm to 7pm in Littleton Millennium Memorial Hall.

The second will be on Saturday, November 11, from 10am to 2pm, at The Henry Beaufort School. A two-minutes silence will take place at 11am.

The consultation events will be followed by a series of workshops and further events throughout the winter and into next summer, before the final planning application is submitted to the council.
