Romsey Rugby Club hosts event with Downton Distillery

Organisers hailed the evening with Downton Distillery an “overwhelming success”, with all tickets selling out.

The event on Friday, July 7 began with Romsey Chamber of Commerce’s monthly ‘First Friday’ before distillery founder Hugh Anderson took the floor.

Hugh showcased his Explorer Gin, made at the base in Salisbury, and demonstrated how the drink could be enjoyed neat, with tonic or as a cocktail.

The gin expert guided everyone through the taste and aroma of each botanical that he uses to create his award-winning gin, with drinks paired with sharing charcuterie boards.

Before acoustic guitarist Austyn Brown closed the night, Mr Anderson shared the difficulties facing small producers and how important it is to support local, independent businesses.

Mayor of Romsey, John Ray, attended with his wife Rose and purchased a bottle of the gin to take home. Cllr Ray said: “We have had a brilliant evening, it was fascinating to hear how the distillery started and the history behind how Explorer got its name and Hugh was captivating to listen to.”
