A NEW play tower will be installed in a Kings Worthy playground, despite concerns over its height.

Kings Worthy Parish Council applied for the tower, as part of a replacement project at Eversley Park.

Winchester City Council approved the plan, at its planning committee meeting on Thursday May 24.

Patricia Dowdell spoke in opposition to the tower, saying it was too tall and that the materials were inappropriate.

The Holdaway Close resident said: “I wish to emphasise that none of the objectors is against a climbing frame, they simply want something more appropriate to the location.

“One house has no screening at all and the trees in question are all deciduous. They have only just come into leaf. This means that for half the year they provide no screen at all.

“The playground is open 24/7 and, after hours, older and bigger individuals often use it, especially in the summer. In effect, anyone who cares to can climb it.

“The Next Door website warns that there are frequent thefts from sheds in the area.

“I see no point in providing a vantage point for anyone who wants to observe neighbouring houses and gardens.

“The materials are not compatible with a park environment. They're not even compatible with the already installed equipment, which has a substantial amount of wood in its construction.”

Colin Crossburn, from Kings Worthy Parish Council, said: “We ask the committee to approve this. This represents the final part of a major refurbishment.

“We believe we have taken the necessary steps to reduce the impact on residents.”

Cllr Jackie Porter, who represents The Worthys on the city council, said: “I fully support the idea of the village playground. It has grown in size and the collection of play equipment is amazing.

“However, residents are concerned over the potential impact of the tower.”

The planning committee agreed to permit the plan.
