WINCHESTER has lost its one and only Currys as the electrical store closes its doors for good.

The branch in Winnall closed for the final time earlier this month as its lease at Unit 3, Easton Lane came to an end.

The nearest branch for Winchester residents is now more than 10 miles away in Hedge End.

A spokesperson from Currys previously said: “Our Winchester store will be closing on May 13 as the lease comes to an end and we continue our focus on retail park stores where we can offer our customers the widest possible range. We’ve had discussions with all colleagues impacted by this decision and they have been offered roles in our neighbouring stores.”

The closure sparked concerns over rent prices on social media, with even larger chains being outpriced.

Before the store closed, a member of staff confirmed that it would no longer be economically viable after the landlord increased the rent.

The unit has been stripped of the purple Currys branding, how it will be used next is currently unknown.

The closure follows plans to transform the neighbouring Homebase car park into a Greggs drive-through.
