A WINCHESTER pub is undergoing a £1m refurbishment ahead of its official reopening in late July.

The Cart and Horses, in Kings Worthy, will be transformed with a new team, look and menu.

Works began on the 18th century building, owned by Greene King, in April. The pub company is aiming to keep the Grade II listed building’s character and history alive with exposed original brickwork, open fires and a re-imagination of the old Coach House.

The makeover will centralise around the bar and the front door will open straight into the bar area, where the wine, beer local ale and soft drink selection will be on display.

A 10-seater private dining room is being added with a private entrance to be used for private events and family get-togethers.

Meanwhile, outside will see two electric charging points installed and the gardens will be re-landscaped. More than 39 new jobs will be available, with the hope of staff being local to the area.

New manager, Ed Dugdill, said: “Blending tradition with innovation, the pub’s sympathetic restoration will take inspiration from the buildings original features and alongside our food and drinks menu, showcase the best of modern-British pub dining.

“With dedicated spaces from cosy drinking nooks to heated outdoor dining in newly landscaped gardens, the pub will seat more than 300 guests both inside and out, helping us to firmly put The Cart and Horses at the heart of this wonderful community.

“It’s so exciting to be able to start talking about it all now and we can’t wait to open the doors to our brand-new pub right in the middle of summer.”

Menu highlights are set to include shared plates, Sunday roasts with all the trimmings and seasonal specials in addition to wine, beers, cocktails and coffee.
