A member of staff confirmed that the branch is closing as it is no longer economically viable after the landlord increased the rent.

A spokesperson from Currys said: “Our Winchester store will be closing on May 13 as the lease comes to an end and we continue our focus on retail park stores where we can offer our customers the widest possible range. We’ve had discussions with all colleagues impacted by this decision and they have been offered roles in our neighbouring stores.”

The retail park is currently owned by real estate developer The Hargreaves Group, which purchased the site in 2019. The company has been contacted for comment.

The news has sparked complaints on social media with people pointing out that the nearest Currys store will be at Hedge End more than 10 miles away.

It sells numerous household items including washing machines, fridges, laptops, TVs, and games consoles.
